When I was little, I remember looking at the skyline of Atlanta and asking my grandmother, Sugar, if she would take me to the "blue bubble" - the restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Regency. She said it was a bar and I was too young. In the years that followed, this icon of Atlanta became dwarfed by many other buildings, but my desire to go to the blue bubble never dimmed.
I tried to go on my 40th birthday, but found that it was under renovation. I tried again earlier this year with a good friend in town. She was here the two nights that Polaris is closed.
I gathered a few girlfriends two weeks ago determined to make it before I turn 50. So, one more attempt and finally success! We drank Prosecco and celebrated as we revolved in the lounge. The view may not have included far away places, but the night lights were beautiful and the reflection of the blue bubble on surrounding buildings made it memorable.
Did you know that Polaris is in the background of a couple of scenes in the movie Insurgent? Although the story is set in futuristic Chicago, it's really Atlanta and Serenbe you'll see in the movie.
