I've grown up watching the Atlanta Braves. I have many memories that date back to sitting in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium watching Hank Aaron work his magic. I remember watching Dale Murphy run the bases. More than anything, I remember all the amazing family memories. I had a father-daughter date at the stadium when I was about 10. I went to the games with siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. We used to pack picnics that always included Aunt Beth's Big Bad Wolf brownies and take them IN to the stadium.
The early 90s were a time of great excitement! Pennants, disappointing World Series losses and finally a World Series win in 1995. I remember Bobby Cox, Sid Bream, Terry Pendelton, Chipper Jones, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Avery. I remember the first home game for Fred McGriff when there was a fire in the press-box. And who could forget David Justice and Halle Berry.
I remember Chief Noc-A-Homa, Deion Sanders, the Wave, the Chop, Ted Turner, Jane Fonda's bejeweled caps, and the rally caps.
While all the farewells seem to be focused on saying goodbye to Turner Field, it's really a much bigger goodbye. It's a goodbye to the City of Atlanta.
Going to an Atlanta Braves game will never be the same.
